Nassau, The Bahamas, February 21, 2010. From, Thursday, February 18th to early Sunday February 21st, The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Limited (BTC) suffered significant failure on its GPRS (EDGE) Hardware and Software Platforms which service both Blackberry services and other mobile data and internet features. As a result, subscribers to these services were unable to access the internet via their mobile devices. Company spokesperson, Marlon Johnson, today announced that the service was restored around 4a.m. this morning. Mr. Johnson advised that the company will compensate its customers a "week's worth of Blackberry service" in the form of a $10.00 credit to all BlackBerry and mobile internet subscribers. This will be applied to their bill during the next billing cycle.
"On Thursday February 18th, BTC suffered significant failure to its Data Hardware and Software Platforms. As a result, Blackberry and Mobile Data subscribers were without Data Service for almost forty eight hours. We appreciate the frustration that our customers faced as many have come to depend on Blackberry and mobile internet for business and personal needs. Indeed, our EDGE [mobile internet] platform is usually extra-ordinarily reliable. Unfortunately, late on Thursday we were hit with a combination of situations that led to the system failure. These circumstances overrode our redundancy provisions and led to a full shutdown of the platform. We will be adding additional robustness and redundancy to the platforms to minimize these types of instances going forward.".
BTC has rarely reported outages regarding its BlackBerry and Data Services. However, the company has advised that the service will be closely monitored in order to avoid reoccurrence. Subscribers may be required to power their devices off and on in order to access the service.
