New Providence, The Bahamas, December 16th, 2009 –The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Limited (BTC) announced today that the company will give a portion its funds allocated for its annual corporate Christmas functions for the less fortunate in our communities. The sum total of these donations equal $15,000.00.
The Salvation Army, Great Commission Ministries and The Red Cross were the beneficiaries of these gifts from BTC. These organizations were given $5,000 each. The funds will assist their feeding programs.
“We are happy to be able to give back to those in need especially during the Christmas holidays,” said Vice President for Marketing, Sales & Business Development. “Considering the country’s economic climate, we believe that these types of gestures are not only timely but very significant,” Johnson continued.
For almost eight years The Salvation Army has been instrumental in providing assistance to needy. The organization has several branches including Family Services, Character Building, Army’s Friends, Disaster Services, Women’s Shelter, Workshop for Blind Adults, Erin Gilmour School for the Blind, Feeding Center, Family Thrift Stores, Senior Programs and Spiritual Life.
Major Lester Ferguson from the Salvation Army said, "BTC's generous donation will go a long way in meeting many of the needs that come our way during this time of the year, especially in light of the economic hardship that so many Bahamians are experiencing. This donation is a testament to BTC's commitment to good cooperate citizenship and community involvement. Christmas has always been a season of giving, and we are grateful to have committed supporters like BTC that allow us to help so many families and individuals in need. On behalf of the families who will have a better, brighter Christmas because of this donation, we say "thank you, BTC."
The Bahamas Red Cross has been active since the 1930s, and over the years has provided assistance to persons in New Providence and the Family Islands. Brandon Watson, President of the Bahamas Red Cross said “The Bahamas Red Cross in its continuing effort to assist the most vulnerable of our community is grateful to BTC for this kind gesture at this time. When so many are facing economic hardship your generosity will help us to lighten their load and perhaps bring some cheer to them.”
Great Commission Ministries was founded in the Bahamas in 1987. The organization offers several services including homeless shelters for men, women and children, a food bank, a feeding centre, a Hope House drug rehabilitation program, a youth club, a homework and reading center, a counseling center and much more.
Bishop Walter S. Hanchell and the Board of Directors of Great Commission Ministries said “We commend this company for this most generous act of benevolence, as in so doing it has demonstrated its concern for the less fortunate persons in our nation. Your contribution is a timely one and will be of great assistance to this ministry, due largely in part to the increased numbers of persons who are now seeking our assistance subsequent to the downturn of our nation’s economy. It will be utilized in our various feeding programmes, emergency shelters and Save the Children Club programme.”
This year BTC gave more than $150,000 to community organizations, the youth, sports and culture.
