New Providence, The Bahamas, November 24, 2008 – The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Limited (BTC) is warning its subscribers of email scam. There is an email being circulated with the subject “Verify and Update your www.batelnet.bs email.” BTC is cautioning its customers not to open or respond to this email as they may be at risk for identity theft.
Vice President responsible Public Relations Marlon Johnson said, “BTC is investigating this email scam, in the meantime we are advising our customers not to open this email or respond to it. The email asks customers to provide their personal information. BTC will never ask customers for any confidential information via email.”
This email thread began late last week. It asks customers for information on their personal identity including, their first and last name, email user name and password. The email further warns customers that if they fail to verify this information in a seven day period they will loose their email permanently.
Customers that have responded to this email are advised to change their password immediately and to call our BatelNet Help Desk at 225-5282 to report this information as soon as possible.
