Nassau, Bahamas July 15th 2008: The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Limited, BTC has announced that it will be donating two hundred laptops to public schools and children’s homes in the upcoming school year. This announcement was made during the 24th Annual Conference & Trade Exhibition of CANTO.
Executive Vice President Mr. I. Kirk Griffin said “A part of BTC’s mission is to increase the digital divide by increasing internet access. We are proud to say that these laptops will certainly play a significant role in allowing our children in the far flung islands to be connected to the world as our children in the capital are.”
“We are certainly grateful to Nortel for their vision in assisting with the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative,” continued Mr. Griffin.
BTC currently provides free internet service to all public schools throughout The Bahamas. The company will also provide the selected schools and children’s homes with WiFi service to accommodate the laptops.
These laptops are a part of the “Connect the Caribbean” initiative that CANTO has embarked on.
BTC will make an announcement in August stating exactly which schools will receive laptops, however, the company’s adopted schools, H.O.Nash, Stapeldon School, Gambier Primary, Oakes Field Primary, and Thelma Gibson School will receive first preference.
This donation is another thread in the fabric of BTC’s commitment to the youth and the social development of the nation. BTC unselfishly gave almost $750,000 dollars to education, youth, sports, and charities in 2007.
