Nassau, Bahamas April 14, 2008: The Bahamas Telecommunications Company Limited, (BTC) is preparing to commercially launch its mobile data offerings in May. In preparation, BTC began a beta testing program on April 7th to conduct a final analysis of mobile content with a small group of customers.
BTC has branded this hip and trendy new service ‘BU’ (pronounced be you) with the tagline, ‘live a little’. BU offers a full suite of mobile entertainment services allowing GSM customers to showcase their individuality and uniqueness. With the proliferation of new media in the global sphere, BTC believes that BU is poised to meet their customers’ needs, allowing them to personalize their phones and extend its use from simple voice services to new and exciting data features.
“As a progressive telecommunications provider we continue to watch market trends, examine and explore innovative communication solutions that effectively connect our customers to their needs,” said Marlon Johnson, Vice President of Marketing, Sales & Business Development. “BU covers a diverse spectrum of features and services that we are sure our customers will be excited about.”
“Right now, we have just started our Beta test phase which allows us to work closely with a small group of persons to work out any technical or customer service issues before we launch the product fully. We will launch first with our post-paid GSM customers and then move onto our pre-paid customers in a few months,” continued Mr. Johnson.
BU, BTC’s mobile data offering will provide subscribers with a wide variety of services including Content, Short Messaging Service (SMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS).
The BU Content offering will feature monophonic, polyphonic and real ring tones, animated screen savers, wall papers and ring back tones (coming soon). It also offers java games and animated logos. BTC customers will be able to order content via the BTC website or by sending SMS messages to a short-code. In addition to international rich media content, BTC also expects to feature and showcase content from a variety of local artists.
SMS presently allows customers to send and receives text messages between mobile phones and MMS will allow you to send colour photos, pictures, sounds, video and long text messages to family and friends.
GPRS gives customers the ability to access the internet while on the go with their mobile phones. You are able to send and receive email messages, you can send instant messages and use other web based applications.
In the first phase of the launch, BU will only be available to GSM post-paid subscribers. BTC offers several attractive GSM post-paid packages designed to meet the varying needs of our customers. Post-paid packages are as low as $19.99 a month. Wireless customers are encouraged to experience the lower rates, flexibility and the many advantages of GSM post-paid service. Unfortunately, BU will not be available to TDMA customers because TDMA technology does not support mobile data features. As TDMA roaming ends on April 30th, TDMA customers are urged to switch to GSM which provides a modern and advanced cellular network with the ability to access modern services like BU.
